A fully electronic ballast

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is a fully electronic ballast. This technology is micro-processor controlled and works at higher frequency (hertz) than the standard magnetic ballast meaning more light gets to your plants. It is also more efficient meaning more output per watt of energy consumed. The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is dimmable and also, has a boost setting for each lamp size meaning you can take control of the light output.

Available in 250/400w and 400/600w.

More light output per watt of energy consumed

With the new LUMii® DIGITA Ballast less wattage is lost in the transmission of power from the wall socket to the lamp. Better power management means more light to the plant and less energy consumed. The quality of the light produced is also a lot more stable thanks to LUMii®’s power management software built into the unit that monitors for lamp degradation and power fluctuation from the grid, this produces a higher hertz rate and optimum light levels. The lamp is very quick to ignite, using less power at the ignition stage and giving your plants a full spectrum light source within 5 minutes (magnetic ballast technology takes up to 20 minutes for the lamp to come up to full brightness).

Ultra quiet

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is one of the quietest ballasts on the market with no hum or vibration (this is common with magnetic or fan cooled electronic technology).

Ultra compact and cooler operation

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is one of the smallest and coolest running available, this has been achieved by creating a component set that does not generate a lot of heat. Less heat and a well-designed body shell means you can have less airspace inside the body which allows the design to be smaller. In addition, less heat means more efficient use of power and better environmental control.

Ultra lightweight

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is very lightweight, the 600 watt is only 3kg compared with 8kg for a 600 watt magnetic ballast.

Safe operation

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast has safety features built in that protects the unit’s circuitry, if a short is detected. When the ballast detects an abnormal input or output voltage, due to an old or damaged lamp, it will not attempt to ignite the bulb.

The LUMii® DIGITA Ballast is resin covered on the inside, helping to protect from dust ingress to the components and creating even heat distribution, meaning there is no fan. This means the product is more robust and has increased longevity over fan based ballasts.

If you’re new to hydroponics, the idea of setting up your first system can be a daunting one. Many suppliers of hydroponic systems try to make this first step easier by selling complete hydroponics starter kits, ready to go straight out of the box. In this guide we take a look at the Nutriculture GT205 NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), which was featured on the ITV1 Alan Titschmarsh show a few weeks ago.

One of the smallest starter kits Nutriculture provide, the GT205 is perfect for beginners of hydroponics and growing plants indoors. If you were to compare a NFT hydroponic system with conventional soil-based methods, the NFT has little to no growing medium (i.e. soil), which leaves the roots completely uninhibited, whereas soil will absorb water and nutrients that is needed at the root. The roots in the NFT system are effectively “bare” so they they gain maximum exposure to oxygen and to the nutrients meaning ensuring better growth, giving up to a x4 higher yield. And because there is little to no growing medium used, there is little chance of diseases infecting your plant and less waste material to dispose of.

The way the Nutriculture GT205 gro-tank system works is remarkably simple. There is a tank at the bottom, which contains the nutrient solution and a duct/channel system, which sits atop. The duct system acts as a channel above the tank to direct the nutrient solution over the roots. There is a pump provided which means that the solution is fed to the roots and any unused solution is fed immediately back into the tank, ready to be fed back in again. This method not only ensures that there is little wastage, but the plants are never under-fed or over-watered. The pump works constantly, so there is no worrying a bout timers or feeding schedules.

Each of the Nutriculture Gro-Tank NFT systems contain:

Tank

Tray

Correx top Plate

Delivery System

Pump

Spreader Mat

pH down

Test Kit

Emptying Tube

And most importantly full instructions on how to assemble and operate your system.

Were you watching the Alan Titchmarsh Show on ITV 1 last Monday? If you did, you’d have noticed that during their gardening segment they covered hydroponics and it’s advantages of growing in the home. It’s unusual to see this featured on the TV, let alone ITV 1, but it shows that hydroponics is starting to gain the recognition it deserves.

We sent them a X-stream Aeroponic 12 site propagator and a GT205 go-trank, both from Nutriculture. The pair make a great starting set up for any budding hydroponic grower as they come with everything needed. To buy the X-stream or GT205 click on the links above, or head over to their own category page, which can be found here.

Missing from the line up, but still integral to growing hydroponically are grow lights or grow tents, which they didn’t have time to cover in the show.
Many people have heard different things about hydroponics, there are many misconceptions about what it’s for and how to do it. Literally, hydroponics means working water, taking from “hydro” meaning water and “ponics” meaning labor. The growing of plants using hydroponics techniques is hardly a recently development. The roots of Hydroponics dates back several hundred years B.C. from civilizations like the Aztecs the Chinese and in the hanging gardens of Babylon. But since then, the technologies used in hydroponics have come on leaps and bounds making it a very different growing method today.

Quite simply, hydroponics is the method of growing plants in non-arable areas, such space ships (yes, NASA does use Hydroponics), Pacific based soldiers in World War two, or more mundanely, if the soil is too inhospitable for effective growth. As Hydroponics developed it became more accessible to the casual grower or farmer and quickly people grew more aware of the inherent advantage of growing hydroponically over traditional methods.

The Advantages of Hydroponics are:

Growing with far higher yields than soil-based growing ensuring that you get more produce out of each crop.

Fast growing crops, because the grow environment is fully controlled by you, the optimum levels of nutrients, oxygen and water can be directed to the root in a way that soil-based growing can’t.

The ability of growing where you otherwise wouldn’t be able to, indoors and outdoors.

Eliminating the need for use of toxic pesticides on your crop as the majority of pests live in soil. Although this doesn’t mean there aren’t precautions that have to be taken.

In further guides we’ll look at the various grow systems like the Ebb and Flood Flo-Gro Basic and the Drip Irrigation Atam Wilma Complete Kit. Artificial lighting and grow lights, controlling nutrients, the different types of growing medium, methods of climate control, using grow tents and more.

It can look daunting now, but as you ascertain the grow method which best suits your needs, the rest will fall into place. If you are feeling brave you can build your own hydroponics systems or purchase them from a hydroponics store like ours, 1st Hydroponics.
